Biography

Eric W. Ayers, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.A.P.  is an Associate Professor (Clinician Educator) in the department of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. 

Dr. Eric W. Ayers, M.D., is a distinguished medical professional currently serving as an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Wayne State University School of Medicine. With over 29 years of experience at Wayne State University (WSU), Dr. Ayers holds a dual appointment in these departments, contributing his expertise to both specialties.

Professional Roles and Achievements:
In addition to his role as Associate Professor, Dr. Ayers serves as the Associate Program Director at Wayne State University School of Medicine, playing a pivotal role in shaping the education and training of medical residents in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. He is also an active member of the WSUSOM Executive Committee, contributing to strategic planning and decision-making.

Dr. Ayers has been recognized by every educational institution he has attended, including the University of Detroit Jesuit High, Michigan State College of Natural Science in 2011, and Wayne State University School of Medicine in 2019, where he was honored as an outstanding alumnus.

Community Involvement and Recognitions:

Beyond his academic commitments, Dr. Ayers actively participates in community service and serves on several boards both locally and nationally. He provided expertise in pediatrics, adolescents, and young adult health issues as a board member for Black Family Development for eight years. He also served as a member of the Gold Humanism Board and the Executive Committee on the National Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Program Directors Association.

Dr. Ayers has served on the advisory boards of various organizations, including the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) and the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS). His contributions to these organizations have been invaluable in promoting mentorship and fostering compassionate healthcare.

Research Interests and Professional Memberships:

Dr. Ayers' research interests encompass hypertension, adolescent health, men's health, asthma and lung disease, transitional care, and resident life issues. He is published and has served as a reviewer for prestigious medical journals. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and the Gold Humanism in Medicine Honor Society.

Education and Personal Life:

Dr. Ayers attended the University of Detroit Jesuit High School for his secondary education and pursued his undergraduate studies in Microbiology at Michigan State University (MSU). At MSU, he graduated as one of the 25 outstanding seniors and was elected to the Mortar Board National Honor Society. He completed his medical training at Wayne State University School of Medicine. He furthered his education with a three-year fellowship in substance abuse sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and a one-year Faculty Development course at Michigan State University.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Ayers is a proud father of two children. His daughter, Symone Ayers, is pursuing a career in special education, while his son, Bradley Ayers, is involved in business finance and resides in Atlanta with his son, Greyson Allen Ayers.

Dr. Eric W. Ayers continues to exemplify excellence in academia, community service, and medical leadership, leaving a lasting impact on the field of medicine and the communities he serves.
